Growing in the Spiritual Gift of Prophecy

Prophecy is a message God has for a person or group which he gives to a Christian to deliver for him.

How to grow in the spiritual gift of prophecy:

1. Ask God to give you the gift of prophecy.

·      Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy. (1 Corinthians 14:1)

2. Go all in and pursue radical obedience.

·      How can you grow in your obedience to God’s commands?

3.  Grow your prayer life and practice listening to the Lord’s voice for your own life.

A good way to begin growing in the gift of prophecy is to listen to the Lord’s voice for your own life. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice” (John 10:27).

·      Hold what you think the Lord is saying to you in your heart.

·      Write it down in a journal and go back to read it from time to time.

4. Practice it.

Learning to use the gift of prophecy well is a growth process, as is true with all the gifts.

·      The more you practice, the more you grow.

·      If a one-year-old baby were constantly worried about using bad grammar or saying the wrong thing, he or she would never learn to talk!

·      Whoever tries to walk in the gifts of the Spirit will make mistakes, but mistakes can be the occasion for further growth.

·      A key to this process is to be humble and not to take yourself too seriously.

5. Immerse yourself in the word of God.

Another way to open yourself to prophecy is to be immersed in the Word of God, so that your mind is renewed by it.

·      Each of the biblical prophets had read and studied earlier prophets.  Jeremiah, for instance, was familiar with the words of Isaiah. Ezekiel in turn studied Jeremiah.

·      If a prophet assimilated the revelation God had already given, God could use him to bring further revelation.
